The prequel and the sequel.
So much was recorded during the 'Kathi' sessions and in the time following 'Joe's' release that we had considered doing a double album for a little bit. But the material on 'Kathi 2' exists, for the most part, in a different space than 'Kathi.' While tracks like Treat Her Right's "Marie," Bobby Fuller Five's "Fool of Love," and the Rolling Stones' "As Tears Go By" are essentially B-sides originally intended for the other release, a good portion of the songs here (like the 11-and-a-half minutes of "The Medley" or the woozy electronic blues take on Townes Van Zandt's "Kathleen") are more experimental and always needed there own home. So consider this a companion to last week's release, but one that doesn't require that frame of reference to enjoy. Songs range from a high energy take on Dave Edmund's "Queen of Hearts" to a solo acoustic demo of Bob Dylan's "Abandoned Love." Live staples "Deep River" and "Columbus Stockade Blues" are here, as are sandwiched together songs from two americana folk heroes, Joni Mitchell (her christmas classic "River," which Maclean released as a holiday single to friends and family a few years ago) and Iris DeMent (the sociopolitically poignant "Wasteland of the Free"). More Dylan and Beatles covers round out a set that may be less cohesive than 'Kathi,' but one also allowed to be more exploratory, showing other sides of the artist.
